AES Corporation was founded on January 28, 1981, by Roger Sant and Dennis Bakke, former employees of the U.S. Department of Energy. Initially, under the name Applied Energy Services, the company provided energy-efficiency consulting services. In 1988, AES became the first independent power producer in the country. This laid the foundation for a new energy market model.

In 1991, the company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange and began international expansion. In 1993, AES acquired the San Nicolas facility in Argentina. By the end of the decade, the company had entered the markets of Latin America and the United States. In 2000, it was included in the S&P 500 index and acquired Gener, strengthening its positions in Chile and Colombia.

In 2001, AES purchased IPL in Indiana and the Venezuelan company Electricidad de Caracas for $ 1.7 billion. In 2003, the company opened the first liquefied natural gas terminal in the Dominican Republic. In 2006, it launched the Performance Excellence program and began construction of the Maritza thermal power plant in Bulgaria. In 2008 and 2009, the company initiated projects in Vietnam and Jordan. During this period, the first utility-scale energy storage battery in the United States was commissioned.

In 2011, Andrés Gluski became CEO. Under his leadership, AES expanded into renewable energy. In 2015, the company acquired Mainstreet Power. In 2017, it purchased sPower, the largest solar project developer in the United States. In 2018, together with Siemens, it created Fluence, a platform specializing in energy storage.

In 2020, the company commissioned the 1.3-gigawatt Southland Repowering project. In the same year, a virtual reservoir was created in Chile. In 2021, AES launched the Alamitos Battery project and signed an agreement with Microsoft to supply renewable energy.

In 2023, the company won a tender to build wind and solar facilities in New York. In 2024, the Delta Wind project was completed in partnership with Amazon. In the same year, the AI robot Maximo was introduced, designed for solar panel installation.

AES signed a contract with Meta to supply 650 megawatts of clean energy for data centers in the United States.

About half of its capacity comes from renewable sources, 32% from gas-fired power plants, and the rest from coal. The development of green energy is connected with the acquisitions of SeaWest, sPower, and Community Energy Solar.

In the early stages of the brand’s existence, the AES (Applied Energy Services) logo reflected the company’s global ambitions in the energy sector.

The name AES is written concisely in uppercase letters. The font is austere, similar to Neo Sans or Frutiger, and the text is dark blue. Below the name is the slogan “the power of being global,” rendered in thin, slanted lowercase letters. A light blue shade was chosen for it, contrasting with the main text and adding a sense of lightness to the composition.

On the left is a circular symbol formed by two abstract shapes with smooth curves. The upper part of the symbol is elongated and green, resembling a drop. On the right side are two segments in different shades of blue that gradually narrow and converge at the bottom of the symbol. White spaces are left between these elements, creating additional volume and depth.

The AES logo evokes associations with nature, water, vegetation, and even the globe. The combination of colors and symbolism underscores the company’s activities in the energy sector and its focus on global markets.

2020 – today

When AES signaled its transition to innovative technologies and clean energy, the company needed a symbol that conveyed its ambitions and new business direction. The new brand identity, unveiled on October 28, 2020, and created by the renowned agency Wolff Olins, became a clear signal of change.

The logo features a smooth, soft “aes” inscription, rendered in lowercase letters and consisting of a single continuous line connecting all the characters. Each letter is characterized by rounded contours, free-flowing geometry, and delicate stroke endings, making it visually pleasing and easy to perceive. The typeface style is similar to Nunito or Quicksand.

The lettering is filled with soft color transitions. The gradient begins with a rich blue on the letter “a,” gradually flowing into a warm purple tone. The lowercase “e” is colored purple at the top, smoothly transitioning to a soft blue at the bottom. The composition is completed by the letter “s,” which gradually shifts from blue to bright green.

The updated look reflects the company’s shift in focus toward cutting-edge innovations and the energy of the future, underscoring the brand’s readiness to meet today’s challenges.
