Chemed was incorporated in Delaware in 1970 as a subsidiary of W. R. Grace & Co. On April 30, 1971, it received the Specialty Products Group, including businesses in specialty chemicals, industrial sanitation, and technical services. Its early holdings included DuBois Chemicals, a producer of industrial cleaning compounds and chemical dispensing equipment.
In 1980, Chemed acquired Roto-Rooter, founded in 1935 around Samuel Oscar Blanc’s drain-cleaning machine. The company later expanded from sewer cleaning into plumbing repair. On March 10, 1982, Chemed became independent from W. R. Grace and continued operating as a diversified holding company.
During the 1980s and 1990s, Chemed owned National Sanitary Supply, Omnia Group, Patient Care, Service America, and other businesses. It gradually sold assets as its focus changed. Roto-Rooter became a wholly owned subsidiary in 1996, and Chemed later bought individual franchises to place more territories under direct control.
By 2003, Chemed had exited specialty chemicals and briefly changed its name to Roto-Rooter, Inc. In February 2004, it acquired VITAS Healthcare for about $415 million and restored the Chemed Corporation name in May. After selling Service America in 2005, the company concentrated on VITAS and Roto-Rooter. VITAS later expanded through acquisitions, competing with Addus HomeCare and Enhabit, while Roto-Rooter continued buying franchise territories, including deals in San Francisco and Fort Worth in 2026.

The smaller words CHEMED CORPORATION appear below. They use a thin sans-serif typeface in uppercase letters. The second line identifies the company’s full legal name. The difference in letter size and weight separates the short name from the corporate designation. Both lines appear in black.
