The Colorado Eagles hockey club logo embodies the team’s identity and athletic ambitions. Its design symbolizes the team’s regional affiliation and competitive nature.
The Colorado Eagles hockey club was founded in 2002 by former NHL player Ralph Backstrom, who established a team in Northern Colorado. The Eagles joined the Central Hockey League (CHL) in 2003, winning their first President’s Cup (now known as the Ray Miron Cup) in their second season, and repeating the success in 2007.
In 2011, the team moved to the ECHL and won consecutive Kelly Cups in 2017 and 2018. The Eagles advanced to the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2018 as the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche affiliate, consistently qualifying for the playoffs and maintaining a rivalry with the Utah Grizzlies.
Home games are played in Loveland at the Blue Arena, formerly known as the Budweiser Events Center. The Eagles regularly sell out their arena and remain among the most successful minor league hockey teams in North America.
Meaning and History
What is Colorado Eagles?
It is a Colorado-based hockey team competing in the American Hockey League (AHL) as an affiliate of the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche. Before joining the AHL, the team had competed successfully in the ECHL, winning the league’s top trophy, the Kelly Cup, twice. Home games are held at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland.
2002 – today
The Colorado Eagles hockey club logo was approved at the team’s founding and has remained unchanged despite the moves from the CHL to the ECHL and later to the AHL. Its visual style has remained stable and recognizable for more than two decades.
The composition centers on the head of a bald eagle, rendered in an aggressive, dynamic style with black outline strokes that emphasize the bird’s predatory profile. The eagle’s eye, with a sharp and focused expression, conveys determination and the team’s competitive aggression. At the same time, the large yellow beak provides contrast and defines the silhouette.
Behind the eagle’s head are three broad stripes, angled to the right and colored in deep blue, yellow, and red. These stripes represent the bird’s wing in motion, metaphorically referencing the team’s energy on the ice. The chosen colors align with Colorado’s official state symbols, reinforcing the club’s regional identity.
Beneath the eagle’s image is a text block reading “Colorado Eagles.” The lettering uses a geometric serif typeface with a heavy, solid structure. The letters are white with a double yellow-and-black outline, creating a three-dimensional effect. The font is a customized version of a sports-serif grotesque, similar in spirit and shape to well-known typefaces such as Machine or Compacta. It is specially adapted to fit the sports aesthetic.
The color palette is carefully selected and standardized, with deep blue (#00205B) symbolizing reliability and strength, bright yellow (#FFCD00) conveying energy and positivity, and red (#C8102E) representing passion and aggressiveness on the ice.
The logo was created by the club’s in-house design team in collaboration with Mark Miller, co-founder and the first head of marketing for the Colorado Eagles. The longevity and consistency of the design are attributed to its well-thought-out structure, which enables the mark to be effectively utilized across a range of formats and applications, from player uniforms to digital platforms and merchandise.
