Firewire Surfboards: Brand overview

Firewire Surfboards traces its roots to 1975, when Australian shaper Nev Hyman founded Odyssey Surfboards in Perth. He renamed the business Nev Surfboards in 1981. He became an early user of computer-aided board design during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Surfers including Mark Occhilupo and Wendy Botha rode his boards.

In late 2005, Hyman partnered with Western Australian shaper Bert Burger, known for sandwich construction using balsa rails and composite skins. Investors joined the project, and Firewire was formally established in 2006. In 2007, CEO Mark Price introduced the Firewire name for international markets. Production moved to Thailand, where EPS foam, epoxy resin, CNC shaping, and AKU Shaper software supported consistent manufacturing.

Dan Mann became a central designer and created models including Sweet Potato and Dominator. In February 2015, Kelly Slater acquired about 70% of the company. Slater Designs launched in 2016 with work from Daniel “Tomo” Thomson, Greg Webber, and Mann. The FRK later developed from a 2015 prototype that Slater left unused for two years before testing revived the project.

Rob Machado joined in 2016 and designed Seaside, Too Fish, and Machadocado. Firewire later introduced Helium, TimberTek, Volcanic, and Proflex constructions. In January 2025, it released ROB MACHADO: BY DESIGN. By then, Firewire and Slater Designs were sold in more than 60 countries. They competed with Channel Islands Surfboards and JS Industries.
