Meaning and History
What is Invesco?
An Atlanta-based investment company is among the world’s largest asset managers, overseeing more than $1 trillion in assets. It provides solutions for private and institutional clients, including mutual funds, ETFs, separately managed accounts, model portfolios, and alternative investments. Having started as a bank trust division, the organization later became independent and grew through acquisitions, including AIM Management Group and Trimark Financial.
1990 – 2007
Invesco’s history began in Atlanta in 1935. Charles Dexter McCoy founded Investment Counsel, Inc., an investment management company. It later became part of Citizens & Southern National Bank. In 1978, the bank separated its asset management division into an independent organization named INVESCO. The group retained 1935 as the starting date of its history.
The name INVESCO was formed from the words “Investment Company.” It reflected the company’s business and distinguished the investment division from the Citizens & Southern National Bank structure. The name later expanded to the international business. The British company Britannia Arrow acquired it in 1988 and later became INVESCO plc.
INVESCO merged with AIM Management Group in 1997. The parent company became AMVESCAP plc. The name combined parts of AIM, INVESCO, and “capital.” The holding company included AIM, INVESCO, Invesco Perpetual, and other asset management companies.
The ring logo represented the parent group in materials for investors and partners. AIM, Invesco Perpetual, and other members of the holding company continued using separate names and identities in client communications.
The emblem appeared to the left of INVESCO. It had the form of a black ring with a large opening. A solid curved line formed the upper section. At the bottom, the outline transitioned into a series of diagonal stripes separated by white spaces.
The solid arc formed most of the circle, while the diagonal stripes divided the lower section into segments. White spaces separated the black lines and added internal structure. The opening kept the ring from becoming fully enclosed.
The black word INVESCO appeared on the right. The uppercase letters used a thin serif typeface. Narrow strokes and wide spacing made the wordmark appear lighter than the heavy ring. The upright letters used the same color as the emblem.
2007 – today
Shareholders approved the renaming of AMVESCAP plc as Invesco plc on May 24, 2007. Management linked the change to Invesco’s recognition in international markets and its association with investment management. The shorter name replaced the complex AMVESCAP form created after the combination of several asset management companies. The group introduced a new corporate identity for divisions in different countries in November.
The mountain emblem came from the British division Invesco Perpetual, where it had been used for approximately 25 years. Following the 2007 renaming, it began representing the entire group. Ama Dablam, a Himalayan mountain in Nepal, served as its basis.
The emblem consists of a blue circle containing a white mountain. Sharp angles, broken slopes, and varied surfaces form the silhouette of Ama Dablam. White spaces divide the peak into several planes, creating illuminated and shaded areas.
The logo uses blue and white. The simplified mountain outline appears within a compact circle suited to business and product materials. Blue connects the image with the name, while white forms the peak.
The word Invesco appears beneath the circle. The initial “I” is uppercase, while the remaining letters are lowercase. The wordmark uses a sans-serif typeface with rounded forms and uniform stroke widths. The vertical arrangement separates the mountain and name into two levels.
Beginning in November 2007, the emblem united the asset management divisions and investment products under the Invesco name. The mountain image had previously represented mainly Invesco Perpetual. Following the name change, it moved to materials for the international group while preserving a connection with the British division.
Invesco replaced the Invesco Perpetual and PowerShares brands in several business areas in 2018. Investment products moved under the shared name, while Ama Dablam remained part of the identity.
The British studio Browns later adapted the system for digital media. The project included guidelines for using the emblem, animation, sound design, and materials for different countries. The circle containing the mountain received additional applications in digital environments.
Invesco updated its global brand with the agency Prophet in 2024. The project covered communications and the customer experience. The agency retained Ama Dablam while changing its role within the broader identity system.
