1996 – 2006

The early Nexstar brand was entirely typographic, even though “star” was already part of the name. The identity used a long horizontal signature that combined the company name and a description of its business in one block. “Nexstar Broadcasting Group, Inc.” received the primary position and reflected the company’s involvement in television broadcasting.

Nexstar’s history began on June 17, 1996, through the initiative of Perry A. Sook and the support of investment firm ABRY Partners. Its first asset was WYOU, a television station in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Nexstar considers the acquisition the starting point of its corporate history. During its first years, the organization operated as Nexstar Broadcasting Group, a name reflecting its role as an owner and operator of television stations.

The logo resembled an elongated plaque divided into two colored fields. A black section on the left contained the white word “Nexstar.” The right side displayed “Broadcasting Group, Inc.” in black against a white background. The color division distinguished the short name from the full corporate designation while keeping them within one line.

A double border ran around the plaque. The inner outline was black, while the outer one used a light gray-beige tone resembling gold. The frame connected the two text areas and enclosed the composition within a single elongated block.

“Nexstar” appeared in thin sans-serif letters. A capital “N” began the name, followed by lowercase characters. “Broadcasting Group, Inc.” used a similar style with narrower letters. Differences in color, size, and character width separated the short name from the descriptive section. The full name helped viewers and business partners understand the new company’s field of operation.

2006 – 2017

In 2006, the “star” portion of Nexstar’s name received a star image for the first time. A large gold-colored figure appeared beside the name, turning part of the corporate name into a separate emblem. The updated signature retained the full name Nexstar Broadcasting Group, Inc., while shifting the balance between text and image.

The star appeared on the left and partially overlapped the word “Nexstar.” Its asymmetrical outline consisted of elongated rays with sharp angles. The lower left ray extended below the line, while the upper ray crossed above the name and continued into a long horizontal stroke. Several rays ended near the letters, making the figure appear integrated with the wordmark. The emblem had a solid gold-olive fill.

The heavy black word “Nexstar” began inside the star. A capital “N” opened the name, followed by lowercase letters. The dense sans-serif typeface and broad strokes separated the name from the emblem’s thin lines. The smaller uppercase line “BROADCASTING GROUP, INC.” appeared below. It shifted right to leave room for the descending ray.

The star version appeared as the company expanded beyond its early group of regional television stations. Nexstar completed an initial public offering on NASDAQ and acquired Quorum Broadcasting in 2003, increasing its portfolio of broadcasting assets. During the following years, the group developed digital operations and continued acquiring television companies. “BROADCASTING GROUP, INC.” appeared in the logo alongside the company’s legal name, Nexstar Broadcasting Group, Inc.

2017 – today

Nexstar replaced “Broadcasting” with “Media” in its corporate signature on January 17, 2017. The acquisition of Media General closed on the same day, and Nexstar Broadcasting Group, Inc. became Nexstar Media Group, Inc. The new name reflected the combined company’s broader operations, including local television, digital media, and content assets. “Media Group” expanded the corporate name beyond television broadcasting.

The primary arrangement still featured the star, the large Nexstar name, and a smaller line below. The update changed the lower inscription and redistributed the corporate colors. “MEDIA GROUP, INC.” replaced “BROADCASTING GROUP, INC.” The gold tone moved from the star to the Nexstar wordmark, which had previously been black. The lower line remained black.

An asymmetrical five-pointed star with elongated rays appears on the left. Its outline extends over the beginning of the name and connects with the letter “N.” Several rays end near the text, creating an open contour. Long lines, sharp corners, and extended sections form a large figure in a light gray-gold shade with a brown undertone. The word “Nexstar” uses the same color.

The name appears in a medium-weight sans-serif typeface with even strokes and rounded joins. A capital “N” begins the word, followed by lowercase letters. Centered below it is “MEDIA GROUP, INC.” in thin black uppercase letters. The smaller lower line preserves Nexstar’s leading role. At the same time, the revised descriptor communicates the group’s expanded business profile.

The star signature accompanied Nexstar’s continued growth. The 2019 acquisition of Tribune Media brought new television stations and WGN America, which later became NewsNation. The company acquired The Hill in 2021 and gained a controlling interest in The CW Network in 2022.
