Numberblocks began in 2016, when education consultant Jo Boaler joined British animation studio Blue-Zoo Productions to create a preschool series built around early math. The series debuted on CBeebies, the BBC’s children’s channel, on January 23, 2017. The first season included 15 episodes, each about five minutes long. A second season arrived in 2017, adding new characters and expanding the range of math ideas inside the plots.
In 2018, the third season introduced numbers up to 20 and moved into more advanced topics, including multiplication and division. In 2019, the series reached viewers outside the United Kingdom, including the United States, where it became available on Netflix and gained a wider audience.
The fourth season appeared in 2020 with fractions, geometry, and numbers up to 100. The fifth season followed in 2021, adding negative numbers and more complex arithmetic. The brand then expanded into books, apps, and toys based on the same characters and lessons. By 2022, educators were using the series in early math programs, and in 2023 the show continued developing new material for preschool learning.
