Microchip manufacturing requires nanometer-level control, where even minor deviations can affect the final batch. To achieve this, measurement and analysis systems track parameters at every stage. The Onto Innovation logo represents a company that develops equipment and software solutions for semiconductor process control.
Onto Innovation was formed in October 2019 from the merger of Nanometrics Incorporated and Rudolph Technologies, manufacturers of inspection and metrology equipment for the semiconductor industry. Nanometrics was founded in 1975 in California. The company specializes in optical systems for measuring film thickness and microchip parameters. In the 1980s and 1990s, it expanded its product line to include solutions for measuring critical dimensions and material composition. Its partners included Intel, Samsung, and TSMC. In 1998, Nanometrics went public on NASDAQ under the ticker NANO.
Rudolph Technologies began operations as Rudolph Research. Dr. Paul Rudolph founded the company in New Jersey in 1940. Initially, it produced laboratory instruments. In the 1980s, it entered the semiconductor market with optical inspection systems. In 1995, it created a subsidiary, August Technology Corporation. In 2007, Rudolph acquired August for $ 230 million.
In February 2019, Nanometrics and Rudolph announced a merger of equals. The combined annual revenue was about $ 500 million. The transaction was completed in October 2019. The new entity, Onto Innovation, began trading on the NYSE under the ticker ONTO. Its headquarters were in Wilmington, Massachusetts.
In 2020, Onto Innovation unified production processes and standardized internal operations. In 2021, amid the global chip shortage, the company recorded an increase in orders. In 2022, it introduced a new generation of systems for 5 nm and 3 nm process nodes. In 2023, Onto Innovation acquired a Japanese division specializing in lithography metrology. In 2024, it began investing in artificial intelligence systems for automated defect analysis.
Onto Innovation remains a public company with a market capitalization of several billion dollars. It serves the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers.
Meaning and History
What is Onto Innovation?
An American company that holds a leading position in the production of high-precision inspection and metrology equipment for the semiconductor industry. Its systems provide quality control for microchips at feature sizes down to 5 nanometers, measuring twice as accurately and 10 times faster as traditional methods. The organization was created after the merger of Rudolph Technologies and Nanometrics. The company collaborates with major manufacturers, including Nvidia, and works with fabs in China, Taiwan, and South Korea. It develops equipment for wafer inspection and surface measurement used to produce microchips for data centers and artificial intelligence systems.
2019 – today
Onto Innovation was formed in 2019 through the merger of 2 equipment manufacturers serving the semiconductor industry. Nanometrics specialized in optical metrology, while Rudolph Technologies worked in defect inspection, lithography, software analytics, and semiconductor packaging equipment. The combined business needed a name that encompassed the entire portfolio and gave equal standing to both engineering traditions.
Rudolph Technologies traced its history to O.C. Rudolph & Sons, founded in 1940 to manufacture measuring instruments. Physicist Vincent Coates founded Nanometrics in 1975. The company measured thin films and three-dimensional structures during the early stages of semiconductor wafer fabrication. The merger-of-equals agreement was signed on June 23, 2019. The companies’ technologies complemented one another, together covering measurement and inspection at different stages of chip manufacturing.
The New York agency Thackway McCord handled the naming process. The work had to be completed on a tight schedule because the combined company was preparing to launch shortly after the transaction closed. Employees from Nanometrics and Rudolph Technologies were invited to join the discussion and submit name suggestions.
The company announced the name Onto Innovation on October 15, 2019. The English word “onto” suggests a transition to the next subject, stage, or direction. Paired with “Innovation,” it expressed an intention to continue technical exploration and develop new technologies. Rudolph CEO Michael Plisinski connected the name to future objectives, growth, and the company’s commitment to innovation. The shared engineering theme allowed the combined business to be presented under a separate brand.
The merger was completed on October 25, 2019. Nanometrics Incorporated adopted the legal name Onto Innovation Inc., and Rudolph Technologies became its subsidiary. Shares began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker ONTO on October 28. The first part of the name also became the stock ticker. When announcing the name, the company said it would soon unveil the logo and the rest of the identity. The transition from Nanometrics and Rudolph was planned in stages, with familiar product names retained during the rollout.
Thackway McCord developed the name, logo, colors, typography, and materials for implementing the brand. Cath McCord served as creative director and lead designer. The team included Bianca Song and Kevin Grzejka. Simon Thackway and Jonathan Peisner handled positioning.
The logo, used since 2019, consists of 2 red words in different sizes. Large lowercase “onto” lettering occupies the lower portion. The thin “innovation” lettering sits above the right half, beginning over the “t” and extending to the right. The upper line fills the open space above the main word. Size establishes “onto” as the primary name, while “innovation” explains the company’s focus.
The “onto” lettering uses a heavy geometric sans-serif style. Both “o” letters resemble circles with large white counters. Their rounded contours combine with the thick strokes of the neighboring letters. In the “t,” the crossbar rises at an oblique angle and divides the form into 2 parts. Custom drawing distinguishes the wordmark from standard typesetting.
The upper “innovation” line is set in thin, upright lowercase letters. Sans-serif forms and consistent stroke weights connect it to the main word. The weight difference separates the descriptor from the name, while the shared rich red color unites the lines.
In supporting visual materials, the letters’ interiors were filled with images and video footage. Translucent colored planes appeared alongside them. Their overlap recalled optical layers, images, and measurement data. Transparency signaled science, while the digital visual style reflected the company’s technological specialization. The joining of 2 information streams represented Nanometrics and Rudolph’s combined expertise. The theme was later continued through the phrase “The Power of Connected Thinking.” It was applied to the combined portfolio of metrology, defect inspection, lithography, and manufacturing analytics.
In 2020, the project received gold Transform Awards for naming and corporate rebranding. The work later received a DNA Paris award for branding. In 2021, the Onto Innovation identity won silver at the Indigo Design Award in the logo and branding categories.
