A business’s financial needs may include equipment leasing, asset insurance, investments, and support for large-scale projects. Such operations require a company that operates across multiple sectors and can offer a range of tools depending on the situation. The Orix logo is associated with a Japanese financial group that provides leasing, investment, asset management, and other services to the corporate sector.
Orix was established in Osaka in April 1964. The company’s original name was Orient Leasing. It was founded by Japanese entrepreneurs, with participation from United States Leasing International. The goal was to introduce the leasing model in Japan, which had already been successfully used in the United States. In its early years, the company provided leasing services for office equipment and vehicles to small and medium-sized businesses.
In the 1970s, Orient Leasing entered the computer and medical equipment leasing market. In 1973, the company’s shares began trading on the Tokyo and Osaka stock exchanges. In the 1980s, the company began diversifying its operations. Real estate, venture investments, and financial services divisions were developed. In 1989, the company received a new name, Orix Corporation. The name reflected its pursuit of flexibility and speed.
In the 1990s, international expansion began. The company opened offices in the United States, Asia, and Europe. In 1990, it acquired American Diversified Capital Corporation. In 2000, its assets included ORIX USA Life Insurance.
In the 2000s, the company strengthened its presence in investment, real estate, and infrastructure. In 2007, Orix acquired 90% of Robeco’s shares. The deal amounted to 2.7 billion euros. The asset was later sold.
In 2013, the corporation received a concession to manage Kansai Airport. Its partner was Vinci Airports. Since 2016, Orix has been investing in renewable energy. The company has been developing solar and wind projects in Japan and abroad.
In 2020, profits declined due to the decrease in asset value. After that, management optimized the portfolio and focused on key business areas.
The company is an international holding. It operates in the leasing, real estate, insurance, infrastructure, energy, and private investment sectors. Its client base covers Japan, Asia, the United States, and other regions.
Meaning and History
What is Orix?
One of the largest financial groups in Japan, combining leasing, lending, insurance, investment, and asset management. The company operates in transportation, equipment, aviation, and shipping, offering both corporate and consumer financial solutions. Its portfolio includes projects in real estate, infrastructure, and renewable energy. Through subsidiaries, it provides insurance products and banking services. The business includes investments in airports, stadiums, hotels, and commercial real estate.
1964 – 1989
ORIX was established in Osaka in 1964 under the name Orient Leasing Co., Ltd. At the time, leasing was still a new financial instrument in Japan. Its founders included Nichimen Corporation, Sanwa Bank, several trading companies, and banks.
The first logo reflected the company’s business profile. The upper line featured the large abbreviation “OLC.” Bold uppercase sans-serif letters and black coloring gave it the formal appearance of a financial institution.
Below it was the Japanese inscription オリエント リース, representing the name Orient Lease and linking the Latin abbreviation to the domestic market. The smaller size of the lower line preserved a neat, professional presentation.
The logo looked like a plain corporate name without decoration. It suited a company entering the leasing business during a period of rapid economic growth in Japan.
1989 – today
Following the name change, ORIX received a logo intended for a financial group with international ambitions. The transition from Orient Leasing Co., Ltd. to ORIX Corporation reflected the company’s expanded business scope. By then, it had moved beyond leasing and was offering a broader range of financial services.
The logo is credited to Jane Matens and Taku Miyamura of Landor Associates. The name ORIX combines “Original” and “X.” The letter “X” represents infinity, flexibility, and multiple areas of business.
The composition features a tilted red parallelogram above the blue ORIX name. Diagonal lines run through the red shape. According to ORIX China, they represent the group’s companies united by a common goal. A circular shape on one of the lines represents the globe and the brand’s expansion into international markets.
The lower section consists of the ORIX name in uppercase dark blue letters. The Basilea serif typeface gives the wordmark a professional appearance. Its thin letter strokes contrast with the solid red shape above. A rounded opening with semicircles appears among the red lines, making the upper section resemble lines passing beneath an optical lens.
