Steven and Brittany Yeng created Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey. Steven was born in Cambodia, survived the Khmer Rouge regime and polio, then reached the United States after living in a Thai refugee camp. In America, he first tasted peanut butter and later called it the “taste of freedom.” At OB Noodle House in San Diego’s Ocean Beach, he mixed peanut butter with Jameson whiskey, and the drink became popular.
Brittany graduated from UC San Diego and earned a master’s degree in chemistry. While expecting their first child, the couple decided to turn Steven’s bar recipe into a bottled product, combining his restaurant experience with her scientific knowledge.
Skrewball launched in San Diego in 2018. The name came from “screwball,” meaning an eccentric person, and the bottle carried a dedication to misfits, black sheep, and oddballs. The founders financed the launch themselves, filled and labeled bottles by hand, and delivered the first cases. They sold four cases in under ten minutes, followed by fifteen more in four hours.
Sales grew 500% in 2019 and 1,976% in 2020. Skrewball later passed Jameson and Grey Goose in some categories, won Market Watch’s Best New Product award, and received Best Flavored Whiskey at the New York World Wine and Spirits Competition. By 2022, annual sales exceeded 500,000 nine-liter cases. In March 2023, Pernod Ricard, owner of Jameson, Absolut, Glenlivet, and Martell, acquired a controlling stake, while the founders remained with the company.

2018 – today
Skrewball created an unconventional logo at the top: a slightly melted ram, resembling chocolate or caramel, slowly dripping downward. The face is minimally depicted; the ears and nose are drawn in simple, clean lines, while the fleece looks liquid, mixed, and marbled in black and brown tones. This hints at an unusual combination of whiskey and peanut butter, with a smooth, distinctive taste.
Below the ram is the large inscription SKREWBALL. The letters are massive and straight. In the center is the letter “W,” broken into separate pieces, not whole but split apart. It appears unconventional and hints at the creators’ unexpected flavor combination.
Even lower is a small, neat inscription: “PEANUT BUTTER WHISKEY.” The text color is brown, slightly golden, and warm, like peanut butter or soft whiskey. All this conveys the image of Skrewball whiskey: sweet, atypical, and slightly surprising, just like its logo: understandable, symmetrical, yet slightly mysterious due to the ram with its liquid fleece.
