The WooCommerce logo symbolizes the convenience of e-commerce and the platform’s practicality, highlighting its focus on simplicity, efficient sales, and seamless integration with online businesses.

WooCommerce: Brand overview

WooCommerce’s history began with WooThemes, a company established in 2008 by Mark Forrester, Magnus Jepson, and Adii Pienaar. It specialized in developing WordPress themes and worked with a distributed global team.

In 2011, WooThemes began developing its e-commerce platform and contacted the developers of the Jigoshop plugin. Following unsuccessful negotiations, WooThemes invited Jigoshop’s leading developers, Mike Jolley and Jay Koster, to create a new product based on Jigoshop’s open-source code.

Thus, in September 2011, WooCommerce was born as a free, open-source plugin. It quickly gained popularity among WordPress users for its simplicity and flexibility. In 2015, Automattic, the owner of WordPress.com, acquired WooThemes along with WooCommerce, maintaining the plugin’s free distribution and introducing cloud-based services.

Today, WooCommerce is one of the leading e-commerce platforms, powering over 4 million online stores worldwide.

The WooCommerce logo conveys the playful character of online commerce envisioned by the WooThemes team, the platform’s creators. The purple color (#96588a) highlights creativity and a digital aesthetic.

The central logo feature is a purple speech bubble that reads “Woo.” It suggests easy communication and direct customer interaction. The rounded, sans-serif, handwritten-like font (similar to Comic Sans or VAG Rounded) creates a friendly feel.

The black word “Commerce,” written in a neutral sans-serif font (similar to Open Sans), complements the name. This part of the logo appears less frequently, with the “Woo” bubble alone emphasizing the platform’s versatility.

WooThemes intentionally avoided overly serious designs, opting instead for a more approachable style. As a result, the logo is associated with the friendly community of WooCommerce users and developers.

2025 – today

WooCommerce Logo

The new logo resulted from the rebranding of the WooCommerce platform, which was officially renamed to Woo. This shortened name reflects the platform’s integration within the broader WordPress ecosystem and its parent company, Automattic, while also emphasizing its simplicity and accessibility for users.

The Woo logo is rendered in a minimalist typographic style, composed of lowercase letters forming the concise inscription “Woo.” The typeface is a custom-developed sans-serif font characterized by distinctly rounded shapes. All strokes and curves are smoothly refined and free of decorative elements, making the logo easily perceptible in digital environments.

The letter “w” has an unconventional form. Instead of the traditional configuration, it consists of a single continuous curve, which adds originality and brand recognition. The remaining letters, two round “o” s, are geometrically accurate and symmetrical, with wide inner spaces that ensure excellent readability across various media and sizes.

The logo’s palette is based on a vibrant lilac-purple shade. This color was chosen in 2022 during the WooCommerce rebranding to strengthen the platform’s integration with the WordPress ecosystem and Automattic. The new palette replaced the darker and more contrasting shades of the previous version, aiming to convey friendliness, accessibility, and openness to a broad audience of entrepreneurs and online store owners.

The Woo design first appeared in public materials for the Woo Express project, becoming part of a unified system of icons, typography, and interfaces for the platform. Through animation, the two “o” letters sometimes transform into wheels, forming a symbolic “shopping cart.” Thus, the emblem reflects the specifics of e-commerce and the company’s dynamic strategy.

The use of this design highlights WooCommerce’s intention to differentiate itself from SaaS competitors by emphasizing its support for medium- and large-scale businesses and the platform’s long-term market positioning in the e-commerce sector.
