The history of the educational platform Schoology dates back to 2007, when it was developed at Washington University in St. Louis. Three students created a website to share lecture notes. These students were Jeremy Friedman, Ryan Hwang, and Tim Trinidad. Initially intended for university students, it unexpectedly attracted interest from school teachers and students, shifting the founders’ original vision.

In 2009, Schoology officially became a company, combining elements of a social network and a learning management system. Colgate University student Bill Kindler joined the team. The company quickly received initial investments and developed the platform, which is accessible on popular devices, including Android, iOS, and Kindle.

By 2015, Schoology had 12 million users across 130 countries, emerging as a leader in educational technology. Clients included thousands of school districts and universities, such as the Los Angeles Unified School District.
