Wild Turkey: Brand overview

The history of the Wild Turkey brand dates back to 1855, when Austin Nichols established a liquor business in New York. Meanwhile, in 1869, the Ripy brothers built their distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. The area became known as Wild Turkey Hill.

In 1940, Austin Nichols executive Thomas McCarthy treated friends on a hunting trip to Ripy’s bourbon, bottled at 101 proof (50.5%). The drink was nicknamed “Wild Turkey Bourbon,” giving rise to the famous Wild Turkey brand, which was officially launched in 1942.

In 1971, Austin Nichols purchased its distillery and renamed it Wild Turkey Distillery. Production was headed by master distiller Jimmy Russell, who began working there in 1954. In 1976, the brand released the world’s first bourbon-based honey liqueur, later popular as American Honey.

In 2009, the Italian Campari Group acquired the brand and distillery for $575 million and invested significant funds in modernization. Jimmy’s son, Eddie Russell, joined management in 2015. A year later, actor Matthew McConaughey became the creative director and, with Eddie Russell, launched Longbranch bourbon, featuring Texas mesquite.

Today, Wild Turkey is among the world’s largest bourbon producers, exporting products to dozens of countries. Production continues in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, where traditional methods are combined with advanced technologies.

2016 – today

The 2016 update to the Wild Turkey logo marked a step toward simplifying the visual identity and abandoning decorative elements. The brand opted for a restrained style, emphasizing clean lines and a clear, structured design.

The name was presented in a serif font similar to the Sentinel and Clarendon families. The classic typography conveyed a solid image and respect for the brand’s historical heritage. The proportions of the letters were balanced, and the density created an impression of reliability and strength, corresponding to the character of Wild Turkey whiskey.

The turkey was retained as the main symbol. Its image was rendered in thin red lines. The form remained recognizable but with a modern style. The bird’s appearance stayed realistic, maintaining the connection to the original image and emphasizing the continuity of the brand’s visual tradition.
