In Brazil, beverages are a part of everyday life, from lunch to gatherings with friends and relaxing by the ocean. Behind the production and distribution of beer, carbonated drinks, and other beverages is a major company that manufactures, bottles, and distributes nationwide and beyond. The Ambev logo is associated with this system, which brings together well-known brands and distributes them to retail chains, bars, and restaurants.

Ambev: Brand overview

Ambev was created in 1999 after the merger of the Brazilian breweries Brahma and Antarctica. The company held about 70% of the national market. The history of Brahma began in 1888 in Rio de Janeiro. Josef Villiger founded a beer production business based on European recipes. Antarctica appeared in 1885 in São Paulo. Luiz Braga founded it. The enterprise initially produced ice and later became a brewery.

By the mid-20th century, both companies had become the largest producers in the country. They invested in marketing and technology. In 1989, control of Brahma passed to investors Jorge Paulo Lemann, Marcel Telles, and Beto Sicupira. They began a large-scale business restructuring.

After the 1999 merger, Ambev added the brands Brahma, Antarctica, and Skol to its portfolio. The company listed its shares on the New York and São Paulo stock exchanges. In 2002, it acquired the Argentine producer Quilmes. In 2004, it merged with the Belgian company Interbrew. As a result, the company InBev was formed.

Since 2008, Ambev has been part of Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest brewing group. In the 2010s, the company developed lines of non-alcoholic and energy drinks. In 2019, it launched the delivery platform Zé Delivery.

In 2023, the company implemented artificial intelligence for quality control and production automation. In 2024, it expanded its cocktail and seltzer lineup.

Today, the company operates more than fifty breweries in Latin America. It remains the largest beverage producer in the region and is a publicly traded subsidiary of AB InBev.

What is Ambev?

It is a leading beverage producer in Latin America with global-scale operations. The company manufactures beer, soft drinks, juices, and food products, including brands such as Brahma, Antarctica, Skol, Stella Artois, Budweiser, and Corona. Its plants and distribution centers ensure a presence in Brazil, Argentina, and neighboring countries. The holding is part of the international AB InBev group.

1999 – 2010

Ambev emerged in 1999 following the merger of “Companhia Cervejaria Brahma” and “Companhia Antarctica Paulista,” two long-standing Brazilian brewing companies. The new company was named “Companhia de Bebidas das Américas.” The short name “Ambev” was formed from “Américas” and “bebidas.” Hence, the name no longer referred to a single beer brand but to a beverage producer serving markets across the Americas.

After the merger, the group moved beyond the legacy of “Brahma” and “Antarctica.” “Ambev” became the common name for the beverage business in Latin America. In 2004, the company entered an international structure through a deal with “Interbrew.” After “Anheuser-Busch” was acquired by “InBev” in 2008, “Ambev” became part of “AB InBev,” but retained its separate name for its Latin American business.

The first “Ambev” logo centered on a single inscription. The name was written as “AmBev,” with capital “A” and “B.” The internal “B” divided the word into two parts. “Am” referred to “Américas,” while “Bev” referred to “bebidas.”

The blue color gave the logo a businesslike and production-oriented tone. The massive typeface recalled “ITC Officina,” and the dense letters looked strict.

2010 – 2018

The next “Ambev” version became simpler. After the “AmBev” version with capital “A” and “B,” the brand moved to the lowercase spelling “ambev.” Earlier, the internal division helped identify the origins of the name in “Américas” and “bebidas.” In the new spelling, the word was already perceived as the unified name of a beverage group.

The meaning of the name remained the same. The color stayed blue, but became darker. The inscription looks stricter and calmer than before. The typeface is sans serif, with thick, rounded letters, close to “Helvetica Rounded Bold.”

2018 – 2020

The “Ambev” version with the arched “CERVEJARIA” inscription returns the brand to its brewing roots. Unlike the dry “ambev” version, the new presentation includes a reference to “cervejaria,” meaning “brewery.” The brand feels closer to beverage production than to a general corporate structure.

The lower part is built around the word “ambev.” It is set in lowercase letters, in a large bold typeface. The forms are rounded, the strokes are almost equal in thickness, and the style is close to a modified “Helvetica Rounded Bold.” The word occupies the lower half of the composition and remains the main accent.

Above it, “CERVEJARIA” is placed along an arc. The letters are uppercase, smaller, and set in a different sans-serif typeface. The arched line resembles a brewery marking or an old production sign. The inscription is executed in black, so this version looks stricter than the blue version and works better with the beverage theme.

2020 – 2024

The new “Ambev” version became a careful revision of the previous logo. The upper arched “CERVEJARIA” line was removed, so the reference to the brewery disappeared. The basis remained one word, “ambev.”

The inscription kept its previous form. All letters are lowercase, the typeface is bold, with rounded lines. The main change was connected with color. Black was replaced with burgundy.

2024 – today

In 2024, “Ambev” updated its style to align with “AB InBev.” The company kept the familiar “ambev” spelling, but changed its presentation. “Fabio Haag Type” and the agency “REBU” worked on the update.

The lowercase “ambev” inscription remained the basis. After the burgundy version, the brand switched to a bright blue. With the new color, the word became lighter, fresher, and more digital.

The typeface was also refined gently. In form, it is close to “Neo Sans,” “Montserrat Rounded,” or “Avenir Next Rounded.” The letters are slightly flattened, the strokes are dense, and the corners are softened. The inscription looks friendlier than the previous version.
