Axalta Coating Systems traces its history back to 1866. That year, Karl Herberts founded Herberts GmbH in Wuppertal. The first varnishes were used for carriages. With the development of the automotive industry in the early 20th century, the company began producing automotive coatings. In the 1920s and 1930s, Herberts opened factories in Europe and expanded exports. After the destruction of World War II, production was restored.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Herberts introduced synthetic polymers and became a supplier to Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW. In 1999, the company was acquired by DuPont for $ 1.7 billion. Based on this acquisition, the DuPont Performance Coatings division was created. In the 2000s, the company opened plants in China, India, and Brazil.

In 2012, DuPont decided to sell the division. In February 2013, the Carlyle Group fund bought the business for $ 4.9 billion and renamed it Axalta Coating Systems. In November 2014, the company held an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange. It raised $ 1.25 billion and had a market valuation of about $9 billion. By 2017, Carlyle had completely exited the project.

What is Axalta?

A Philadelphia-based coatings company was formed after separating from a chemical conglomerate. The main area of activity is automotive coatings under the brands Cromax, Standox, and Spies Hecker. The product range includes waterborne systems and electrodeposited primers, as well as industrial solutions such as Alesta powder coatings, Nap-Gard materials, Imron coatings, and Voltatex compounds.

1999 – 2013

DuPont Performance Coatings emerged within the DuPont corporation as a division dedicated to developing coatings and paints, primarily for the automotive industry. Before the division’s transformation into the independent company Axalta, it used a logo featuring the DuPont emblem on the left and the text “DuPont Performance Coatings” on the right.

The DU PONT emblem consisted of a horizontal, elongated oval with a red outline. Inside the oval, the name DU PONT was written in vertically elongated sans-serif letters. The letters were a deep red, matching the outline.

To the right of the oval was the division’s name, “DuPont Performance Coatings,” in a black font similar to Franklin Gothic or Helvetica Bold. The letters D and P were capitalized, while the rest were lowercase. The simplicity and austerity of the sans-serif typeface harmonized with the division’s technological and industrial focus.

2013 – today

In 2013, the investment firm The Carlyle Group acquired the DuPont Performance Coatings division and spun it off as an independent business under the name Axalta Coating Systems. From that point on, the company changed its style in preparation for its initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange. The brand’s new chapter began with a visual identity, with the logo as a key component.

The Axalta logo combines the symbol and the company name. At the top is a stylized letter A in the shape of a three-dimensional dome, painted a rich red. The symbol’s surface is shiny, with a gradient from a pink hue on the right to an almost white highlight, creating a sense of depth and reflections. The top of the symbol is rounded, while the bottom features wide, solid legs.

Below the symbol is the name AXALTA, set in large capital letters. The font color matches the red of the letter A. The letters are smooth, straight, and rendered in a clean, sans-serif typeface.
