In 1993, Subroc died in a car accident. That year, Elektra canceled KMD’s second album, Black Bastards, over its cover and ended the contract. Dumile then withdrew from music for several years. He returned with a masked persona inspired by Doctor Doom from Marvel Comics, adopted the name MF DOOM and rarely appeared in public without the metal mask.
Operation Doomsday arrived through Fondle’ Em Records in 1999, combining dense rhymes, eclectic samples and pop culture references. In the early 2000s, Dumile recorded as Viktor Vaughn and King Geedorah. In 2004, he released MM..FOOD and Madvillainy, a collaboration with Madlib under the name Madvillain that became a key point in his career.
In 2005, he worked with Danger Mouse on The Mouse and the Mask, featuring characters from Adult Swim. Born Like This followed in 2009, and JJ DOOM released Key to the Kuffs with Jneiro Jarel in 2012. Dumile sometimes sent masked substitutes to concerts, extending the anonymity around his stage identity. He died on October 31, 2020, though the news was announced on December 31. Several posthumous collaborations appeared in 2021.
