Greensboro Grasshoppers: Brand overview
The Greensboro Grasshoppers baseball team started in 1902 as the Greensboro Champs. Over the decades, the team underwent numerous name changes and MLB affiliations, including those with the New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, and Boston Red Sox.
In 1979, the team joined the South Atlantic League, a minor league baseball organization. Starting in 1993, they established a long-term affiliation with the Miami Marlins, changing their name to the Greensboro Bats in 2005, coinciding with a move to a new downtown stadium, and then to the Greensboro Grasshoppers.
An unusual team mascot, Miss Babe Ruth, a Labrador Retriever, earned a place in the South Atlantic League Hall of Fame. In 2011 and 2012, the Grasshoppers won the Northern Division championships.
After 16 years with the Miami Marlins, they became an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Following a major minor-league restructuring in 2021, the Grasshoppers moved up to High-A. As of 2025, they continue playing in the South Atlantic League, drawing large crowds at First National Bank Field.
Meaning and History
What is Greensboro Grasshoppers?
It is a minor league baseball team from North Carolina. The home stadium, located downtown, combines retro style with modern amenities. The club engages with the local community by hosting youth events and charity programs.
2005 – today
The Greensboro Grasshoppers logo, introduced in 2005, features lettering accompanied by a cartoon grasshopper in baseball attire. Since its introduction, the main team logo has remained unchanged in both design and composition. The team name “Grasshoppers” is written in a bold, handwritten script with a rightward slant and soft, rounded strokes that emphasize baseball’s dynamic nature. The letterforms feature smooth lines with noticeable thick-and-thin contrasts, rendered in a three-color combination of green, orange, and cream-beige tones, which provides strong contrast.
Above the main lettering is a green banner featuring the city name “GREENSBORO” in white sans-serif type, which stylistically contrasts with the script and adds a formal accent, highlighting the club’s geographic identity.
The grasshopper character, named Guilford by fans in honor of the local county, was originally drawn with anatomically accurate, spiny legs. Later, for ease of reproduction on embroidery and merchandise, the legs were stylized and simplified. The logo’s original color palette was based on natural tones, featuring forest green, warm soft orange, and neutral cream, which emphasized friendliness and a connection to the surrounding environment.
At the end of 2023, the team underwent a partial rebrand led by Studio Simon. However, the main team logo was left untouched. The changes focused only on alternate marks, cap logos, and supplementary graphics. For these elements, brighter shades were introduced: green shifted to Kelly green, and orange was slightly lightened. Stroke thickness was increased, and details simplified, improving legibility and functionality for use on smaller items, digital platforms, and merchandise.
City symbolism was incorporated into the alternate elements, including a “Block G” monogram for the cap and an alternate “blade of grass G” design. This created a flexible system of visual marks while keeping the 2005 primary logo as the unaltered core of the team’s identity.
Both the original and current versions of the main Greensboro Grasshoppers logo continue to represent the team’s energy, game-day atmosphere, and strong connection to the city and its traditions.
