2016 – today

Snap Inc Logo

Snap Inc. adopted its corporate logo in 2016, when Snapchat Inc. changed its name following the expansion of the business. The new wordmark distinguished the parent company from the Snapchat app and products such as Spectacles.

The company was established as Snapchat Inc. on September 16, 2011, by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown. The app was originally called Picaboo. Following a dispute with another company, it was renamed Snapchat in September 2011. The Snap Inc. name appeared later, when the business expanded beyond a single app.

The word “snap” refers to a quick photograph or brief shot. Snapchat’s main character, the ghost, first appeared during the Picaboo period. Evan Spiegel created it. Within the team, the character was called Ghostface Chillah, a reference to rapper Ghostface Killah. When Snap Inc. adopted its new name, the company took a different approach with a restrained text logo intended for corporate use.

The Snap Inc. logo consists of a black wordmark. The “S” and “I” are uppercase, while the remaining letters are lowercase. The serif typeface resembles Clarendon or Sentinel. Solid contours and heavy strokes make the wordmark resemble a professional business sign rather than an app interface symbol.

The presentation separates two levels of the brand. Snapchat retains its colorful ghost imagery, while Snap Inc. serves as the company behind multiple products. The black wordmark makes the name the main part of the corporate identity and separates it from the app’s playful style.
