The Viber logo reflects the concept of communication without boundaries, symbolizing easy connections and emotional sharing. It conveys the simplicity and convenience of a service that millions use daily.

Viber: Brand overview

The history of the Viber messenger began in 2010 in Tel Aviv, stemming from the friendship between two developers: Israeli Talmon Marco and Russian-born Igor Magazinnik. Having met in the Israeli army, they launched the startup Viber Media, aiming to create a convenient alternative to Skype for international calls.

Initially available on iOS, Viber soon expanded to Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry. In 2013, a version for Windows and macOS was released, followed by Linux support in 2014. The main advantage was the use of phone numbers instead of usernames, along with free calls and messages.

In 2014, Japanese company Rakuten acquired Viber for $900 million. Over time, the messenger added video calls, communities, money transfers, and spam protection. Today, Viber remains popular in Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, with more than one billion users.

In 2010, a purple handset and signal arcs formed the Viber logo, introducing a new communication style. The symbol clearly and brightly expressed connectivity.

Designers chose lilac to represent technology and friendliness. Three arcs symbolized internet calling signals, emphasizing the app’s primary function. The handset’s playful angle suggested ease of use.

The name appeared in a rounded sans-serif font similar to Comfortaa. Black text balanced the bright graphic, providing a sense of calm and reliability.

The design conveyed accessible communication, ensuring rapid popularity.

A purple dialogue cloud became Viber’s new look. Redesigned by Rakuten after the acquisition of the brand, it represented open communication.

The single handset transformed into a speech bubble containing a handset and white signal waves. Purple became a signature color, symbolizing friendly interactions and the intersection of technology. The white brand name retained the rounded Comfortaa-like font.

Below, the new slogan “Connect. Freely” appears in gray, in a sans-serif font resembling Arial Rounded, reinforcing the idea of free communication.

Rakuten’s redesign marked a new era, emphasizing simplicity and accessibility globally.

The slogan turned purple, and the phone icon grew larger, highlighting the style changes. The update intensified the main lilac color.

“Connect. Freely” adopted the corporate hue, strengthening brand consistency. A new rounded-square icon appeared, available in solid, gradient, or outline forms.

Fonts remained close to Comfortaa, maintaining a friendly, accessible feel.

2017 – 2018

Rakuten Viber Logo 2017

Japanese minimalism appeared in 2017. Besides the purple Viber name, the Rakuten Sans font with its characteristic circle appeared in black.

The brand name used rounded lilac lettering, reflecting a friendly and mobile-oriented image.

Rakuten placed its name on the left in black. On the left was a purple circle with a white “R.” This became Rakuten’s official symbol, strengthening corporate ties.

The internal Rakuten team handled the redesign, integrating the app into its global ecosystem and showcasing Japanese minimalism and the parent company’s branding.

2018 – today

Viber Logo

The updated Rakuten Viber logo became part of a strategy to integrate the messenger into Rakuten’s global brand system. The main task of the rebrand was to create a unified style and emphasize the shared origin of the services. For this purpose, a lilac color (#7360F2) was used to unify the visuals of both brands.

The logo consists of two elements: a dialogue cloud on the left, inside which a telephone handset with three signal arcs is depicted. The handset is three-dimensional, with smooth contours and a tilt that imitates a real call. The cloud itself is slightly elongated, has rounded edges, and a sharp point at the bottom, resembling a chat message.

To the right of the icon is the name Rakuten Viber, rendered in different typefaces. Rakuten is set in strict letters close to Montserrat Bold. A decorative line runs below, gradually narrowing toward the end of the word. The Viber lettering is distinguished by smoothness, rounded lines, and softer letterforms, creating a friendly contrast with the first part of the name.

Using two versions of the symbol, with a white and a lilac handset on contrasting backgrounds, increases the logo’s flexibility across different media. The goal of the update was to demonstrate Viber’s affiliation with the global Rakuten platform.

Rakuten integrated its name into Viber’s style, using lilac (#7360F2) to reflect technological focus. “Rakuten” appears in a strict, corporate font similar to Mazzard H Semi Bold. “Viber” retains the soft, rounded VAG Rounded font to emphasize friendliness.

The handset in the speech bubble remains the app’s constant icon, presented as a white handset on a lilac background or a lilac outline on a white background.

The purple-and-white palette symbolizes open communication, positioning Viber as an accessible, tech-oriented platform.
