Audio services combine music, news, podcasts, and live broadcasts into a single stream you can access in the car, at home, and on mobile devices. Users choose a format and access content without being tied to a broadcast schedule. The SiriusXM logo represents a company that provides satellite and internet radio, combining various types of audio content on a single platform.
SiriusXM originated from two 1990s projects to introduce satellite radio. Sirius Satellite Radio was founded in 1990, and XM Satellite Radio in 1992. Both companies received licenses from the Federal Communications Commission and began large-scale investments in satellites and receivers.
In 1997, Sirius adopted its current name and began partnerships with automakers. In 2000, XM launched three satellites. In 2001, the company began broadcasting. Sirius launched in 2002 and offered ad-free channels and exclusive content.
In 2004, Sirius signed a $ 500 million contract with Howard Stern. This agreement greatly increased subscribers. In 2005 and 2006, both companies formed partnerships with major U.S. sports leagues. By 2007, their debts had reached several billion dollars. In February that year, they announced a merger.
In July 2008, the Federal Communications Commission approved the merger, subject to certain conditions. Afterward, Sirius XM Radio was formed. That same year, amid the financial crisis, the company neared bankruptcy. In February 2009, Liberty Media invested $ 530 million and acquired a controlling stake.
By 2011, Sirius XM became profitable for the first time. Subscribers reached 20 million. In 2018, the company acquired Pandora Media for $ 3.5 billion, expanding its presence in digital audio. In 2019, Liberty Media gained full control of SiriusXM.
In 2020, SiriusXM launched its streaming service. In 2021, SiriusXM renewed its contract with Howard Stern. In 2023, the company acquired podcast platform Stitcher for $325 million.
In 2024, SiriusXM announced the launch of new next-generation satellites.
The company brings together 34 million satellite radio subscribers and more than 100 million digital service users. It remains the largest audio holding in the United States.
Meaning and History
What is SiriusXM?
SiriusXM is the largest satellite and online radio operator in the United States, with an office in Midtown Manhattan. Formed by the merger of two radio networks, it remains the only satellite broadcaster in North America. It has more than 150 million monthly listeners and about 33 million subscribers. The programming includes more than 300 channels, including ad-free music, sports broadcasts, news from CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and BBC, and Howard Stern’s talk show, under a $500 million contract. Content is available through car receivers and online. The company acquired Pandora, Stitcher, and Automatic Labs, and developed MySXM, a personalized radio Service.
2008 – 2011
The first Sirius XM Radio logo showed the merger of two existing brands without replacing their emblems with a single symbol. After the competing satellite radio operators merged in 2008, light blue SIRIUS and black XM appeared side by side, separated by a thin vertical line. A shared SATELLITE RADIO descriptor appeared beneath them. Both companies’ names became part of SiriusXM. The brand later combined satellite broadcasting and streaming audio services, offering music, talk programming, news, and sports.
The left side of the design traces its history to Satellite CD Radio, which began operating in 1990. In 1999, the company became Sirius Satellite Radio, named after Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. Known as the “Dog Star,” Sirius is associated with the constellation Canis Major. This explains the black dog beside the large, light-blue sans-serif SIRIUS capitals. The dog has a raised tail, an elongated muzzle, and an upturned ear. A white star appears near its eye, with a small light-colored crescent beside its front paw.
The XM name referenced the familiar AM and FM sequence, presenting satellite radio as the next format. On the right side of the logo, bold, rounded black letters are surrounded by radio waves, with three arcs extending outward on each side. The SATELLITE RADIO line below uses thin black capitals with extra space between the two words. It brings the differently colored and styled elements together into a shared design.
2011 – 2019
In 2010, the radio waves from the former XM logo became a frame for the combined SiriusXM name. The company stopped displaying the two operators’ emblems side by side. The dog and vertical divider disappeared, and the name became a single, unspaced wordmark. The new identity continued to roll out across branded materials in 2011.
SiriusXM uses heavy sans-serif lettering with broad strokes and rounded contours. The opening “S” is capitalized, followed by lowercase letters in “Sirius.” At the same time, the final “XM” rises to the height of the capital. All parts of the name share a dark turquoise-blue color and tight spacing, bringing the two names together on one line.
Three light blue radio-signal arcs with rounded ends extend outward on each side of the wordmark. Their lighter color distinguishes the waves from the name. In the version with a descriptor, a small SATELLITE RADIO line appears beneath SiriusXM in thin, upright sans-serif capitals matching the main lettering’s color.
2019 – 2023
The main change in the SiriusXM logo introduced in 2019 was black lettering. The company retained the single-line name and the two groups of radio waves on either side but removed the SATELLITE RADIO descriptor below. Only the wordmark and six blue arcs remained against the white background. The change reduced the amount of text and strengthened the color contrast between the letters and the waves.
SiriusXM uses a heavy, upright sans-serif typeface. The opening “S” is capitalized, followed by lowercase “irius,” while “XM” reaches the height of the capitals. The wordmark continues the earlier lettering style. Three rounded arcs extend outward to the left and right. They retain their placement and number, with a saturated blue replacing the earlier light blue.
2023 – today
In 2023, SiriusXM introduced a new identity at its Next Generation Industry & Press Preview in New York. Uncommon Creative Studio developed the project with the company’s team. SiriusXM became the first client of the agency’s newly opened New York office. The update coincided with the streaming service’s development and efforts to reach a younger audience. The idea of “Closer” connected the brand to personal interaction among listeners, musicians, and hosts.
The previous elongated logo, with arcs on either side, didn’t fit well in square formats, including app icons. Over time, the waves inherited from XM had begun to resemble a Wi-Fi symbol. The company needed a compact symbol directly connected to the SiriusXM name. The team tested several options with current and potential listeners. The result was the “S-star,” combining the opening “S” with a five-pointed star.
White cutouts within the letter form the star. The broad middle stroke of the “S” crosses its center, leaving the points visible above and below. The radio waves disappeared, while the capital “XM” letters matched the height of the opening “S.” The wordmark retained bold sans-serif lettering, substantial strokes, and straight-cut ends. The star-bearing letter can be used separately from the full name. The image combines a reference to Sirius with the idea of the service’s artists, hosts, and program creators as stars.
The primary colors became saturated blue, black, and white. The company associated them with the night sky and Sirius. The logo options include blue lettering on a white background. Additional colors, called “Firepower,” refer to variations in stars’ temperatures and colors throughout their life cycles.
Alongside the star, the dog from the early Sirius emblem returned to the identity. Named Stella, it serves as a mascot outside the main logo. Uncommon created animated versions showing the puppy wagging its tail, digging, and sleeping. Stella is intended for branded merchandise and digital materials that connect with listeners through the character.
