The Big East Conference was founded on May 31, 1979, by Providence College basketball coach Dave Gavitt. Seven universities initially joined the league: Providence, St. John’s, Georgetown, Syracuse, Seton Hall, Connecticut, and Boston College. The main goal was to develop basketball in the northeastern United States.
In 1980, Villanova University joined, strengthening the basketball program. In 1982, Pittsburgh expanded the league’s geography, and that same year, the first basketball tournament was held at Madison Square Garden.
Since 1991, the conference has conducted football competitions by adding Miami, Rutgers, Temple, and West Virginia. The late 1990s brought national championships and successful NCAA tournament performances.
Significant changes began in 2003, when Miami, Virginia Tech, and later Boston College moved to the Atlantic Coast Conference. Cincinnati, DePaul, Louisville, Marquette, and South Florida were invited to replace them.
In 2013, seven universities split off, forming a new group under the original name Big East, with a basketball-focused approach. Butler, Creighton, and Xavier joined them. In 2020, Connecticut returned to the conference after a seven-year absence.
By 2023, the Big East will remain one of the leading basketball leagues in the U.S., regularly sending teams to NCAA tournaments and developing women’s sports programs.
