In the 1970s, the company participated in international projects. One of them was the Turbo-Union RB199 engine, developed for the Panavia Tornado fighter. In 1983, it joined the International Aero Engines (IAE) consortium, which developed the V2500 engine.

In 1986, MTU joined Eurojet Turbo GmbH to develop the EJ200 engine for the Eurofighter aircraft. In the late 1980s, the company became part of Deutsche Aerospace AG. Later, this structure became part of EADS.

In the 2000s, DaimlerChrysler separated MTU. During the same period, the company established the U.S. division MTU AENA. It became a member of the Europrop International consortium, which produces engines for the Airbus A400M military transport aircraft. MTU Aero Engines adopted its international name in 2000. Its history dates back to aircraft engine manufacturing in Munich in the early 20th century. In 1913, Karl Rapp founded an aircraft engine business in Oberwiesenfeld. In 1917, Rapp Motorenwerke became Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW. Its aviation operations later developed into BMW Flugmotorenbau GmbH, which became legally separate from BMW AG on December 22, 1934. In 1936, production moved to Allach on the outskirts of Munich. The factory site remained MTU Aero Engines’ main complex.

Aircraft engine production stopped after World War II. The industry returned with the establishment of BMW Studiengesellschaft in 1954. BMW Triebwerkbau GmbH was founded in 1957. It repaired American engines, assembled them from supplied components, and developed licensed production capabilities. In 1960, Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg, known as MAN, acquired a 50% stake in BMW Triebwerkbau. In 1965, the business merged with MAN Turbomotoren GmbH as MAN Turbo GmbH. Following the reorganization, BMW left the aircraft engine industry.

The abbreviation MTU appeared on July 11, 1969, when Daimler-Benz and MAN merged their engine businesses. It stood for the German name Motoren- und Turbinen-Union, meaning “Engine and Turbine Union.” The group had 2 divisions. MTU München specialized in aircraft engines, while MTU Friedrichshafen produced diesel power systems. The city names helped distinguish the businesses operating under the shared industrial name.

In 1985, MAN sold its stake to Daimler-Benz. In 1989, MTU became part of Deutsche Aerospace, later known as DASA. Its membership in the aerospace group shaped the company’s visual identity during the 1990s. In the summer of 2000, after the creation of the “European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company”, MTU’s aviation focus shifted. MTU München remained outside EADS and came under DaimlerChrysler’s management. The restructuring included a name change to MTU Aero Engines and the development of a separate brand identity.

The English phrase “Aero Engines” identifies the company’s aircraft engine business. A description of its specialty replaced the location reference. This suited the company’s international operations and helped distinguish it from MTU Friedrichshafen. The historic letters MTU preserved the connection to Motoren- und Turbinen-Union. At the same time, the new portion of the name explained the business to an international audience.

The international branding agency Luxon Carrà was entrusted with the project. The team examined MTU’s previous identity and its corporate communication needs. Peter Smith served as creative director. The agency developed the aviation company’s first separate identity outside the shared DaimlerChrysler system, while DaimlerChrysler remained its owner. The identity was intended for a business with a growing international presence and an increasing emphasis on advanced technology.

The emblem features 3 nested, curved bands. They form an open ring with concentric layers, pointed ends, and strokes of varying lengths. The outer ends extend to the right, toward the name. The spiral shape represents turbine operation. The circle resembles a globe, connecting the emblem to the company’s international activities. Peter Smith described the project as a combination of high-tech engineering and traditional industry.

Large “MTU” lettering sits to the right of the emblem. The bold uppercase sans-serif letters lean to the right and are closely spaced. Their slant follows the extended arcs. Thick strokes make the abbreviation the dominant part of the wordmark.

“Aero Engines” appears beneath the right-hand portion of “MTU.” The initial “A” and “E” are uppercase, while the remaining letters are lowercase. This descriptor uses a small, slanted sans-serif typeface with thin strokes and generous spacing. The difference in size and stroke weight separates the historic abbreviation from the explanation. The emblem on the left and the 2 lines on the right form a compact horizontal logo.

The ring-shaped figure and “MTU” were rendered in a dark blue-green shade called petrol blue. “Aero Engines” used a light gray-blue, giving the lower line a secondary role. The color combination distinguished the new aviation brand from DaimlerChrysler’s identity.

The team compiled usage guidelines in a 70-page corporate identity manual in 2000. It covered the logo, business stationery, printed materials, and interior branding. Examples and detailed specifications established shared requirements for reproducing the brand in technical materials, documents, and signage. Even the binder mechanism was manufactured in MTU Grey, corresponding to Pantone 5425.

The update extended to subsidiary names. Maintenance businesses adopted the shared MTU Maintenance format, adding a city or region, such as MTU Maintenance Berlin-Brandenburg. The components business became MTU Aero Engine Components. The circular emblem and shared lettering connected the divisions to the parent company, while the added wording identified their functions or locations.

The brand remained in place after the ownership change in 2004 and the company’s stock market debut in 2005. The legal name MTU Aero Engines AG retained the existing core name. The logo continued to read “MTU Aero Engines,” while “AG” appeared in the full legal name. A standalone emblem consisting of the 3 arcs was provided for compact applications. The phrase “Passion for engines” appeared alongside the full wordmark, continuing the aircraft engine theme.
